THE LINE, a Slovak-Ukrainian feature film, will compete for the first prize in the Official Selection at an international film festival!

THE LINE is a crime thriller filmed in Ukraine, Slovakia, and Czechia.

Slovak director Peter Bebjak based his movie on a real nailbiting story that took place at Slovak-Ukrainian borderlands in 2007 when Slovakia was entering the Schengen zone.

Together with their Slovak colleagues famous Ukrainian actors were cast: Rimma Zyubina, awarded by the Zolota Yula First National Cinema Award, Stanislav Boklan, awarded by Kyivska Pektoral Award for Best Male Actor, and young aspiring actor Oleksandr Piskunov.

It’s very symbolic that a movie about life on the border will premiere in a few weeks after the announcement of visa-free travel for Ukrainians.  This event is significant not only in ethnographic context, it is also meaningful for culture and history of Ukraine.

THE LINE will compete for the award in the main category with works of famous directors, such as Birds Are Singing in Kigali by Krzysztof Krauze, Arrhythmia by Boris Khlebnikov, Little Crusader by Václav Kadrnka, and Georgian historical drama Khibula by George Ovashvili, a 2014 awardee of the festival.

As you recall, The Line became one of the winners at the 9th Film projects selection of the Ukrainian State Film Agency and won the the first prize in the international section of the Work in Progress competition at Baltic Event XX at Tallinn Black Nights Festival.

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is the most important international film festival of Category A in Central and Eastern Europe, enjoying the same level and importance with festivals in Venice, Berlin, and Cannes. This year 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will last from June 30 to July 8, and its special guest is a Golden Globes and Academy Award winner Casey Affleck.
